Whicker's World - Aboard the Orient Express - May 1982 (Alan Whicker)
Whicker's World - Aboard the Orient Express
Filmed in May 1982, on its first journey in five years after being previously retired in 1977, Alan Whicker journeys aboard the newly refurbished Orient Express from London Victoria to Venice. Among the famous and wealthy travelers are Liza Minelli.
On 14 December 2009, the Orient Express ceased to operate entirely and the route disappeared from European railway timetables, a "victim of high-speed trains and cut-rate airlines". However, beginning in 2025, Accor (a French company) will launch its own 'Orient Express' with journeys from Paris to Istanbul using some restored carriages.
Alan Donald Whicker CBE (2 August 1921 - 12 July 2013) was a British journalist and television presenter and broadcaster. His career spanned almost 60 years, during which time he presented the documentary television programme Whicker's World for over 30 years. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2005 for services to broadcasting.
Episode first aired on January 1, 1983 in the UK

Get your Alan Whickers off and press Play. 😂😂😂
Stuck on a cramped train for 25 hours or so isn’t my kind of fun but put a film crew on board and see how many people want to be seen doing just that🥴
There’s two ways of doing things the great western way or the wrong way
orient express was the name of our local takeaway.
That's when england was still england.
Exactly, the Falkland War, Who Dares Wins at the Odeon and we still knew our neighbours…🇬🇧🙏
Great video Its a shame to think most on the film will have now taken there last journey from life
Jolly hockey sticks - what! what! 😜
38:35 here’s our new King Charles lll now the king of Britain as of today
13:49 today there is no coaling stage at King’s Cross anymore
Is that Jeremy Clarkson in the background at 3:32?
Love a bit of 'nostalgia' however there is nothing to love here. Reptilian people who rightly belong in history with their disgusting furs, vile smoking habits and blinkered views. Supremely interesting and informative all the same of course. 😂👍🏼
Who knew that Liza Minnelli was married to Ellis from Die Hard.
Beautiful stuff from the lovely Alan wicker. Thank you ❤❤❤
astonishing. And the reporter's clothes - like out of the 1920s almost
£500
Wonderful. I watched this in 1982 and went on VSOE in 1985 with my mother to mark her retirement. Nigel Dempster is spot on about a experience you will never forget. Unlike modern documentaries not ever second is packed with a host who feels they have to say something meaningless. Whicker is brilliant, his final concluding sentence is genius..
Hahaha! Fantastic comment and thank you 😂😂😂
They should have retained the old Westrail name and logo. The new Transperth id is ugly!
Where was this televised at the time?
Only internally to Westrail Staff.
@@railwayarchives very professionally done
Do you have one of the Flying Scotsman 1989?
Here .. ua-cam.com/video/39SdnOaHZ84/v-deo.html
10:22 The British Rail arrows are the wrong way round
Shipping worldwide always keep to the right ..
Famously the arrows on the port side of Sealink ships were 'handed' to always point forwards.
Nigel Dempster!
Excellent video.
Thank you so much for keeping these documentaries alive and available
At 6:50 when Alan Whicker say the train is pulled by a diesel, the locomotive is a class 73 electric, powered by third-rail at 750V DC. Class 73 locomotives do have a small diesel engine for running in non-electrified areas, but not for hauling this passenger train.
Oh get you all genned up on rail technology, thanks for sharing this but I’m doubtful anyone will be arsed when we’re here for Alan and his class rather than the serial number of the vehicle in motion. Best wishes.🎸🤣
An experience is always worth the money.
Most depends upon the experience 😂
Ylou do mot know class.
Some fellow has commented in most detailed words the answer to your question above in this Section and despite being beyond my knowledge I’m certain you will be delighted with his comment. 👍 @kevinzzz or something similar is his Channel username.
Worked in the locomotives shed in kalgoolie 1989 1990 what shithole and worked with arseholes
Nice train shame about the w⚓s inside ...🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🤪💩
Pre Channel tunnel.
Thanks to James Sherwood for saving this beautiful train.
Liza Minnelli. Who was her partner here ?
Now costing more like 5000 pounds.
Wonderful. ❤
I do enjoy this documentary very much. Though it’s curious they missed out the 15xx class, despite showing video of it at Paddington right at the beginning.
No way those spectators would be allowed where they are today yet nobody got hurt by the train or the hot steam from the cylinder drains.Unfortunately common sense and being responsible for your own safety has gone out the window along with the shear enjoyment of mainline steam in Western Australia.
Hi Kev, I'd really like to get in touch with you about the possibility of using some of your great footage. Could you please drop me an email at info@greensignals.org to discuss? Many thanks, Stef
My father worked in the 'box at Campbelltown in the 60's &70's used to love watching the steamers working
1.3km a WEEK. When the line was put through to Darwin from Alice Springs, it was kilometres per DAY. Lots of shovel leaning, in W.A.
3:22 I think that Pannier tank is sleeping…
I remembered the Kenwick Railway Overpass at 40:48. The old Kenwick Railway Overpass used to carried the Armadale Line over the freight line when the freight line used to cross the Albany Highway that ran parallel to the Armadale Line. When the WA Government built the Roe Highway Extension, they removed the freight line level crossing signals and elevated the Albany Highway over the freight line and did the same at Thornlie when they built the Thornlie Spur to Thornlie Station.
I like the words - and the music of course - on the reopening of the K&ES railway… (Why didn’t they get Joe Brown to sing?)
Quite - nay - very sad the demise of steam…and I agree with the narrator as regards the « evil smelly box » that was diesel…
Liverpool Street Station scenes….The thought of those passengers getting the carriage doors closed from their risky inside carriage positions and with real risks of getting their fingers pinched let alone squeezed in their daring but necessary operation to close the swinging doors really gives me a right nasty and uneasy reaction…
Great films. I wish they would have lightened them up for better viewing though.
20:17 what on earth is that rear coach???
It's an older style GWR coach known as a Clerestory carriage. They were built between 1883 and 1939. Bogie coaches like the one shown were up to 70 feet (21 m) long and lasted in service up to 1947.
@@railwayarchives Brill thank you. Just the windows at that one end didn't look like anything I'd seen before, like some weird autocoach
Great stuff thank-you! Carousel around that time would have only been opened about 3 years. Once it got busier the need for easier connectivity I suppose played a part in moving the station down adjacent to Cecil Ave.
Cannington station is now going through its 3rd incarnation. A new raised-level station is due to be completed mid-2025. The station will include 16 bus stands, 290 parking bays, lift, escalators and stairs!
@@railwayarchives True!
Very enjoyable video.
40:45 sadly Swindon works is no longer here
21:25 this year is my lucky year because I’ve just managed to see blue Peter for the first time of my life and it was also her very first time ever at the Severn valley railway station
